The Google Home Mini Vs Amazon Echo Dot Review

Introduction

For a long time, smart speakers have not been able to hit the mainstream. They are the kinds of gadgets that people do not know their worth until they try them out. Unlike Google Assistance and Siri on your phone, these unique speakers are totally hands-free. Hence you can just talk to them to get a specific task done while you are busy with something else. That said; the smart speaker market has mostly been dominated by Amazon with Amazon Echo Dot speakers, even though Google has edged in with its Google Home Mini speakers and it is giving Amazon a run for its money. Below are comprehensive reviews of these two speakers.

1. The Google Home Mini Review

a) The Design and Build
Google home mini is an aesthetically pleasing speaker that comes with a pebble-like cloth-covered design that can blend with just about any d├ęcor, resembling a decoration rather than a tech product. Unlike the Amazon echo dot, this unit does not have visible buttons at the top. You merely need to tap on the right or left edge to adjust its volume or just ask it to either be louder or quieter. The four LEDs right at the top usually indicates the status of the speaker even though you may not see the light from far.

b) Audio Quality
The Google Home mini sounds noticeably better when compared to the Amazon Echo Dot as it offers a fuller, more productive and more rounded delivery. Also, the device can hit much higher volumes with punchy bass, thanks to its more significant driver. Even at full capacity, this speaker will manage to keep distortions in check. It is an ideal speaker for just about any room. While it may not replace larger speakers, it would work just fine in case you needed background music while sleeping in your bedroom or any other smaller room.

c) Smart Capabilities
The Google speaker uses the Google Assistant app which has enormous, intelligent capabilities. For instance, you can ask it for the latest cricket scores and get updated on the outcomes of the most recent match. When requested to play music by a specific musician, the device will play the music that is on Google Play Store by default, however, if it is not available on the site, it will automatically switch to alternative services. When asked about the time it could take you to get to a specific place, Google assistance will give you more precise estimates depending on the amount of traffic at that time.

d) Shopping
Unlike echo dot, Google Home Mini does not have smart shopping capabilities just yet. For instance, you cannot use it to add items to your cart or shop from renowned e-commerce sites such as Amazon. However, if you want to go to a physical stall, the device can locate the nearest businesses around you and send directions to your phone for easier navigation and access.

e) Smart Home
The Google home speaker can also use the Google home app to operate a range of home appliances such as your home lighting, heating, and many more. With this option, you are able to switch whatever appliance is synched with the device. This eliminates the hassle of having to walk to every room just to turn your appliances either on or off, hence saving you a lot of valuable time.

2. Amazon Echo Dot Review

a) The Design and Build
The Echo Dot is a compact puck featuring a utilitarian design with buttons at the top which can be used to raise or lower the volume, mute the device as well as activate Alexa’s recognition capabilities. It has an iconic bluish-green hue ring which lights up around the device. However, unlike the Google Home Mini, this one does not have the soft curvy charm. Its design also includes an aux connection which allows you to connect it to another music system for more clarity and higher volume.

b) Audio Quality
Without an external speaker, the Echo Dot can sound quite horrible. It produces thinner and reedy vocals with no significant bass. It has a smaller audio driver which makes it much quieter with harsh treble, limited bass and quite distorted at much higher volumes. The best thing about this gadget is that if you are not satisfied with the sound quality, you can easily connect it to a better audio system using a jack. Moreover, it has extra microphones, which makes it better at listening to your voice commands.

c) Smart Capabilities
Amazon Echo usually uses the Alexa app which also has a range of unique intelligent capabilities to suit your needs. For instance, when you ask it about the latest cricket scores, it will give you more accurate real-time ratings when compared to the Google home mini. When asked to play music, Amazon dot will play tracks from Amazon music by default and only switch to alternative services if the requested track is not on this service. If you want to know the time it could take you to reach a specific place, Alexa echo dot will demand to know your speed before giving you the estimated time.

d) Shopping
Amazon Echo is just unparalleled when it comes to online shopping at e-commerce sites like Amazon. If you want to purchase a product, it will give you the available options with their prices. In case you do not have enough pay balance to make the purchase and you are not willing to pay cash on delivery, it will simply add the product to your cart. On the downside, Alexa dot cannot give you precise locations or directions to local businesses near you.

e) Smart Home
The unit can also be used to operate different home appliances such as home lighting, heating, your fridge and a range of other smart appliances. You just need to synchronise it with whatever appliances you need to control to use voice commands to switch your appliance either on or off for greater convenience. This will save you the time and hassle of moving from one room to another just to turn your appliances on or off.

Final Verdict

Even though these two devices are both great at performing a range of tasks such as playing music, finding general information and operating home appliances, Google home has an edge over the echo dot since it is able to tell you about the traffic, it can help you find local businesses, give you directions to a specific place and even give you an estimated time you might take without knowing your speed. It also looks better, has better sound quality and you can easily sync it with your Android Smartphone to enjoy a more significant user experience.
